Free University of NYC – May Day Call to Education
Turn the City into a Free University! A Free University in Every Park!
May Day 2013
Cooper Union and Stony Brook-SUNY
Call to Education
The Free University of NYC invites neighborhood organizations, schools, unions, spiritual centers, and other community education-oriented groups to create your own Free Universities this May 1st.
The impetus behind this May Day call to education is to encourage local communities to host your own gatherings of free education to ensure they’re directly relevant and empowering on a ground level. Instead of creating one large event, our focus this May 1st will be to cultivate a network of Free Universities that can be sustainably rooted in community-based education across NYC. We think this new model can build on the best aspects of The Free University, and also support local momentum to create spaces for free radical education.
How we can help: The Free University can provide outreach, press, publicity, and logistical support for your local Free U. Our website, freeuniversitynyc.org, can host an interactive map and schedule of events for all NYC Free U’s. We also created a “toolkit” that explains how to create a Free University (see below). Free U members can offer facilitation training and support on-the-ground troubleshooting on May 1.
Following morning and early afternoon Free U sessions on May Day, a city-wide Student Convergence will meet in Cooper Triangle Park at 3PM. This will be an opportunity to build solidarity, dialogue, and community among the different campus groups and a chance to collectively envision future actions, forms of organizing, Free U’s and more on the horizon. At 4:15PM we’ll march to Union Square to join the city-wide May Day Rally and March. Afterwards, a dance party will commence at a location yet to be announced!

Join immigrants and workers this May Day as we highlight the daily struggles facing immigrants and workers in New York City. We will visit several workplaces in midtown to demand an end to exploitation of immigrant workers, ending at Schumer’s office for a speak-out on what real immigration reform looks like.
Please stay tuned for more details! RSVP on Facebook

The 1% intend to privatize what has been an essential public service operated for the benefit of We the People since April 26, 1775. The Main Stream Media would have us believe the USPS’s problems are solely due to the internet. NOT TRUE. While the internet has had a severe impact on First Class Mail volume, it is the onerous pre-funding mandate imposed by a lame-duck Congress in a voice vote in 2006 which is the root cause of the PO’s financial problems.
Meet at noon at the SW corner of Washington Square Park. The march will be from the park to the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office at 14th St. and 1st Ave where participants will deliver some (oversized) post cards and letters. The march will then return to Union Sq. to join the unified May Day rally.
TRAVEL CHANNEL, 18 E 16th St: Atlas Media, the producer of Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible, is well-known as a digital sweatshop, eroding industry standards. Wage theft and overtime violations are widespread as employees are forced to work 50-70 hrs a week without overtime pay. We are calling on Travel Channel and Atlas to stop violating the law and pay their employees what they deserve!
